Problem Overview

In the era of Generative AI, traditional assessment methods—such as essays, take-home assignments, and standard exams are facing an existential crisis. The primary concern for university educators is not the use of AI itself, but the "atrophy of thought." When students rely on AI to generate final outputs, the visibility of their true Conceptual Understanding is lost.

We must shift the paradigm: moving AI from a "cheating tool" to a core Educational Infrastructure. This challenge tasks participants with designing a system where AI acts as a "Socratic interlocutor", facilitating a dynamic evaluation process that ensures learning integrity and deep cognitive engagement.

Challenge Statement

How might we design an AI-supported assessment framework that transcends simple Q&A, probing a student’s deep conceptual understanding and critical thinking while preventing passive reliance on AI-generated answers?

Target Users

This solution is intended for:

  • Higher education students
  • University educators and instructors
  • Institutions seeking new forms of assessment in the AI era

Scope & Focus

Participants are invited to design an AI-supported assessment framework within a chosen academic discipline.

You may select any domain (e.g., Computer Science, Law, Engineering, Economics, Education, etc.) and explore how assessment can be redesigned to:

  • Move beyond static outputs (e.g., final answers, essays)
  • Capture the student’s reasoning process and conceptual understanding
  • Encourage active thinking, iteration, and reflection
  • Integrate AI as part of the learning and evaluation process

The solution should focus on how assessment is structured and experienced, rather than just building a standalone tool.

Your solution may explore (but is not limited to):

  • AI as a Socratic Partner
  • Process-Oriented Assessment
  • Conceptual Understanding Signals
  • Adaptive Evaluation Systems
  • Reflection & Verification Loops
  • Anti-Passive Use Design

Key Elements to Consider

  • Pedagogical Soundness: Does the solution address the root of "conceptual understanding" as defined in higher education?
  • Anti-Bypass Resilience: How effectively does the design prevent the passive use of AI?
  • Feasibility & Scalability: Can this be implemented by professors without increasing their administrative burden?
  • Human-AI Synergy: Does the framework promote a healthy collaborative relationship between the student, the AI, and the educator?

Desired Outcomes

  • A prototype demonstrating the product design (presented on the demo day)
  • A 2-3 minute video and pitch deck explaining your evaluation approach, technical implementation, and how your solution enhances pedagogical assessment.

⚠️ Important: Prototype, Pitch Deck and Video are all essential deliverables!
